The basic tenet is that our assumptions inform our actions and that the ability to recognise and reflect on our own assumptions enables us to ensure that conversations are honest and purposeful, leading to meaningful results for all parties.

The strategy generalises to improved communication in the whole organisation through a culture that sees the exchange of valid information as central to a healthy environment. In particular it addresses how we can overcome the gap between rhetoric and reality in both the way that we function as individuals and in the way the organisation functions. It enables people to articulate what is often difficult to say, either because of personal, often, untested assumptions, or because of taken for granted customs in the prevailing culture.

The approach is based on the work of Chris Argyris from Harvard University and adapted for training by Mike Absolum, Mel Myers and Sue Clark. A new handbook in this area by Myers and Clark is due out soon and will be referenced on this web site as soon as details are available.

The training sessions are usually organized over a term. There is an initial one day introduction followed by three half day follow ups that use practice in real contexts to consolidate learning.

The sessions can operate as stand alone or can be part of a wider programme on leadership development and culture change.
