congruence triangle The Congruence Triangle is a model of change that I developed out of direct practice in one large college of FE some years ago. I now use it as a tool to help colleges or teams of staff to bring about successful change, especially culture change. The approach is based on placing high importance on integration - the way that different facets of an organisation work in harmony to achieve the organisation’s purposes. Participants are asked to review how key elements in their organisation interact and enable or disable the organisation’s capacity to learn and change.

The key elements are categorised into purposes, systems and people. The model allows the organisation to explore each of these in turn and consider strategies that will bring about improved functioning.

As well as using the model to explore key issues in the organisation I also help the college identify methods for establishing an internal dialogue that enables all staff to understand the college’s mission and to contribute to its strategies for achieving goals.

This approach, unlike other areas of the programme I offer, is not offered as a stand alone session but underpins sessions on team development, communication and learning conversations.

The approach has been positively referenced by Colin Flint in A modest revolution, in S. Weil (ed.)(1994)Introducing change from the top in universities and colleges, London:Kogan Page.
