A coherent staff development strategy is essential to achieving the college’s overall strategy. A future orientated organisation ensures staff receive the development they need to access the skills necessary to support any change. Attention paid to this area is crucial to underpin the college’s capacity to become a quality learning organisation. The training takes two forms. Training trainers in the generic skills of delivering effective staff development and particular programmes that I have developed in response to some generally identified needs. The first includes training programmes that develop skills in: how to identify needs negotiating and designing programmes facilitating groups action planning achieving outcomes evaluating the effectiveness of any development motivating staff to take part harnessing the talent in the organisation There is also an opportunity to explore the many different strategies open to colleges to offer their own development, including strategies that enable staff to contribute constructively to the college’s objectives and strategies for achieving them and to participate in the articulation and application of the college’s values.
